Aljamain Sterling was born on July 31, 1989 at Uniondale, New York, U.S. His parents were Jamaican named Cleveland and Sophie Sterling.
He studied at at Uniondale High School, in 2004 he started wrestling to defend himself from the gangs.
After his high school, Sterling enrolled to Morrisville State College where he continued his wrestling. While living in Morrisville he met former champ Jon Jones and joined his wrestling team and later developed interest in mix martial arts.
Aljamain Sterling is a graduate from Cortland with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He was also two-time NCAA Division III All-American with a record of 87–27.
